ETHICS IN BUSINESS
The battle to prevent unconscionable corporate behaviour

As part of the South Pacific 2004 Speakers of Excellence series, Dr. Ned C. Hill and Dr. W. Steve Albrecht will present a series of lectures about fraud - especially corporate fraud - that results from the unethical behaviour of those persons granted the highest levels of trust. They will describe and evaluate how unethical behaviour of those in charge brought about the demise of major companies like HIH, Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing, and Adelphia.

Drs. Hill and Albrecht also will offer insight into the nature of "good" ethics and how it can be legitimized by government, taught by universities and practiced by business. These eminent academicians are well qualified to assume this daunting task. They are, respectively, dean and associate dean of the highly respected Marriott School of Management of Brigham Young University (BYU). In a September 2003 article, "Recruiter's Scorecard" in The Wall Street Journal, BYU was ranked #26 among the world's 50 most prestigious graduate schools of management in the world according to The Wall Street Journal/Harris Interactive survey of corporate recruiters. BYU also was honored as #2 among "Top Schools for Recruiting Ethical Graduates." According to the survey, recruiters selected Yale University and BYU most often when asked to name which M.B.A. programs are best for hiring graduates with high ethical standards.

Dr. Ned C. Hill became the dean of the Marriott School of Management in 1998. From 1996-1998 he served as assistant to then BYU President Merrill J. Bateman, where he was responsible for strategic planning in the areas of international relations, facilities and space management, distance learning, information systems and assessment. He is a widely published author and frequently invited international speaker in the areas of corporate governance, ethics in management, treasury management, electronic commerce and personal finance. He has addressed professional audiences in China, Australia, South Africa, Chile, Korea, the Netherlands, Denmark, Russia, Germany, Mexico, Sweden, Jordan, Slovenia, the United Kingdom and Canada, as well as in the United States.

Dr. W. Steve Albrecht, associate dean of the Marriott School of Management, has published more than 100 articles in professional journals and numerous books on fraud, personal finance, and accounting. Throughout his career he has consulted for more than 65 organizations, including British Petroleum, Bank of America, General Motors, IBM, the United Nations, and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. In addition, he has served as an expert witness in 26 major fraud cases, the largest of which was US$2.8 billion. He has been recognized by Accounting Today as one of the top one hundred most influential people in accounting. He currently serves on the audit committees and boards of directors of one private and four public companies.
